Euthanasia - a Nazi euphemism for the systematic murder of over 300,000 people with psychological, mental or physical disabilities. This dark chapter of history has so far received little public attention. But the new exhibition at the Topf & Sons Place of Remembrance in Erfurt aims to change that. Together with curator Lisa Caspari and museum director Annegret Schüle, we set ourselves the task of giving this sensitive, important topic an appropriate appearance. An additional challenge is that the exhibition is to travel to several places of remembrance throughout Germany.

Task and Approach

Our first traveling exhibition made many new demands on our design: durable, safe, simple assembly and dismantling, with the smallest possible pack size and total weight, reversible without a trace, and flexibly adaptable to different room situations. A travelling exhibition requires much forethought. Once we figured it out ourselves, we were happy with the result! The centerpiece is the 15 exhibition boards that are easily leaned against the walls. You don't need a hanging system or drill holes and you can use long corridors and large halls. If necessary, they can even be placed in the room as a “cluster”.

Hear what moves us!

Extension of the exhibition

At the beginning of 2026, we once again had the opportunity to work with Lebenshilfe Thüringen. The aim was to expand the exhibition with an audio guide. To this purpose, we designed a word and image brand with the text ‘Hear what moves us!’ in the style of the exhibition. At a total of five stations, guides with and without disabilities report in audio recordings on what the exhibition means to them. This encourages visitors to reflect and ask themselves what the exhibition still has to do with all of us today. The audio recordings are posted on the Topf & Söhne website and can be accessed via QR codes. We developed roll-ups for the travelling exhibition and stickers for the permanent exhibition.
